BRUMMIES 59 SHEFFIELD 36

Sunday May 30, 2010
JASON Lyons was in an unstoppable mood to help Birmingham to a 59-36 Premier Trophy win over Sheffield Tigers at Perry Barr on Sunday.

Lyons was unbeaten by an opposing rider in his 14+1 haul as the BRC Roofing Brummies became the first team in the competition's history to win a group with maximum points.

It was a solid all-round display against the Steel City side who needed a point to edge through to the semi-finals – but from the moment they lost big hitter Ricky Ashworth to a wrist injury in the opening race their hopes were dashed.

Sheffield’s British youngster Josh Auty continued his stunning run of form with a magnificent 18-point haul from his six outings and he also contributed to the most exciting racing of the night in front of a big crowd.

He went from third to first in his opening ride to pass the impressive Justin Sedgmen late on to give the visiting fans plenty to cheer.

He also won his second ride for double points on a tactical ride but it was a case of damage limitation as Eric Boocock’s men couldn’t cope without Ashworth.

Hugh Skidmore gained a second from his tactical outing but Birmingham were always in control despite the best efforts of Auty who won a standing ovation from the home fans for the entertainment value.

BIRMINGHAM: Jason Lyons 13+2, Steve Johnston 12+2, Aaron Summers 10, Justin Sedgmen 10, Richard Sweetman 6+2, Kyle Newman 5+1m Simon Lambert 3+3.

SHEFFIELD: Josh Auty 18, Hugh Skidmore 9, Paul Cooper 5+1, Richard Hall 4, Arlo Bugeja 0, Ricky Ashworth 0, Josef Franc R/R.
