NEWPORT 39 BRUMMIES 52

Sunday May 23, 2010
BIRMINGHAM are back on top of the Premier League table after a dominant win at Newport on Sunday afternoon.

The BRC Roofing Brummies tore into their Welsh rivals in the early stages of the Hayley Stadium meeting, romping into a 23-7 lead after five races thanks to four 5-1s.

It was the perfect way to recover from the setback of losing at Scunthorpe on Friday, and it took until Heat 8 for the demoralised home side to even notch a race victory, former Brummies star Craig Watson taking the flag.

Brummies led by a massive 22-points with four heats to go, and that turned out to be a useful lead because they suffered several moments of misfortune late on including falls for both Steve Johnston and Jason Lyons in Heat 13 as the Wasps carded a consolation 5-0.

Richard Sweetman, though, had the final say, moving to double figures with fine passing moves in both Heats 14 and 15 – whilst Justin Sedgmen signed off his prolific spell at reserve with five race wins.

Boss Graham Drury said: “That was much more like it from us and I’m a lot happier than I was on Friday night. We’re now working hard on how we’re going to line up with new averages coming in next week.”

NEWPORT 39: Leigh Lanham 11+2, Kim Nilsson 7, Craig Watson 5+1, Kyle Legault 5, Anders Mellgren 4, Alex Davies 4, Todd Kurtz 3+1.

BIRMINGHAM 52: Justin Sedgmen 15, Richard Sweetman 11, Aaron Summers 10+2, Jason Lyons 8+1, Steve Johnston 6+3, Jake Anderson 2+1, Chris Kerr r/r.
