BRUMMIES 55 KING'S LYNN 36

Sunday August 30, 2009
BIRMINGHAM finally got the better of King's Lynn to move top of the table on a dramatic, incident-filled night at Perry Barr.

And whilst the Stars still have matches in hand in the race for the title, the result is another massive step towards the Brummies contesting the promotion play-offs at least.

The meeting got off to a bizarre start with both Rusty Harrison and Linus Eklof exceeding the time allowance in Heat 1, and Stars reserve Simon Lambert then crashed out whilst avoiding his fallen team-mate Darcy Ward.

Grippy track conditions led to several more falls and re-runs, but the Brummies gradually extended their lead with a terrific all-round effort with both reserves especially praiseworthy.

Former Brummies star Emiliano Sanchez crashed in his last two rides, as the Stars were blown away in the second half of the meeting with four Birmingham 5-1s in a five-race spell.

Darcy Ward banked six points on a tactical ride when he overtook Tomasz Piszcz to win Heat 13 with the Stars desperately trying to save a point from the meeting, but Sanchez's fall in Heat 14 put an end to those thoughts.

Even with the points safe, Heat 15 summed up the rivalry between the sides as the race had to be re-started twice after first-bend incidents, and Ward eventually fell again as he tried to overhaul race-winner Piszcz.

BIRMINGHAM 55: Tomasz Piszcz 13, Richard Sweetman 10+1, Jason Lyons 9+2, Jay Herne 9, Lee Smart 8, Rusty Harrison 4+2, Ludvig Lindgren 2+1.

KING'S LYNN 36: Darcy Ward 9, Tomas Topinka 9, Chris Schramm 5+2, Emilinao Sanchez 5, Jan Graversen 5, Linus Eklof 3+1, Simon Lambert 0.
