RYE HOUSE 43 BRUMMIES 46!!!

Saturday August 08, 2009
BIRMINGHAM smashed Rye House's long unbeaten record with a memorable Hoddesdon victory on Saturday night.

The BRC Roofing Brummies had to wait until after 9pm to start the meeting after delays during the preceding Rye House v King's Lynn fixture - but it turned out to be well worth it, as Graham Drury's side became the first visiting team in 66 to down the Rockets on their own patch.

Rye built an early seven-point lead with both Brummies reserves failing to finish Heat 2, but a strong fightback began when Richard Sweetman and Ludvig Lindgren got the better of Luke Bowen to win Heat 7.

Rusty Harrison's first race win for the club in Heat 8 closed the gap to one point, before a Rye House 5-1 in Heat 10 put them 32-27 up.

But Tomasz Piszcz and Jason Lyons were both superb in the closing stages, and after a 4-2 in Heat 11 and an important share in Heat 12 when Lindgren and Jay Herne closed out Andrew Silver, Piszcz and Lyons took a big 5-1 in Heat 13 after Bowen had come to grief.

The Rockets went back ahead in Heat 14 with Herne falling but Sweetman taking second place behind Chris Neath in the re-run.

So it was up to the Premier League Pairs champions in Heat 15, and requiring a 4-2 to win the meeting they gloriously produced a 5-1 over Neath and Robert Mear to send the travelling supporters wild with delight.

RYE HOUSE 43: Chris Neath 11+1, Robert Mear 8, Linus Sundstrom 7, Andrew Silver 7, Joe Haines 5+1, Luke Bowen 3, Tommy Allen 2+1.

BIRMINGHAM 46: Jason Lyons 13, Tomasz Piszcz 12+2, Ludvig Lindgren 6+1, Rusty Harrison 5, Richard Sweetman 5, Lee Smart 3+1, Jay Herne 2+2.
