BIRMINGHAM 52 NEWPORT 43

Wednesday August 05, 2009
BIRMINGHAM returned to winning ways with a 52-43 win over Newport at Perry Barr - but they were taken to the last race before claiming maximum points.

The Welsh side were heavily reliant on two riders with Leigh Lanham proving a classy No.1 at this level, and Chris Kerr not surprisingly scoring well at reserve.

And though the Brummies never looked likely to lose the meeting, various setbacks along the way prevented them from taking their advantage completely out of reach.

Richard Sweetman uncharacteristically failed to score from his first two rides, falling in his second when chasing Lanham, although he hit back well by winning his last three.

And skipper Jason Lyons blew an engine on the start-line in Heat 13 which allowed Lanham a more straightforward passage to six points as a tactical ride, and gave his side hope of taking a League point away from the Brummies.

But Sweetman took charge of Heat 14 with an impressive Jay Herne just blocked out in a blanket finish for second, third and fourth - and then Lyons brilliantly overhauled Lanham in Heat 15 to wrap things up in style.

Brummies continued to show encouraging form at reserve with Herne and Lee Smart both scoring well, which was important as Ludvig Lindgren was absent after a crash in Sweden on Tuesday, and there was a solid home debut from Rusty Harrison who scored in every ride.

BRC ROOFING BRUMMIES: Jason Lyons (PICTURED) 11+1, Tomasz Piszcz 11, Richard Sweetman 9, Jay Herne 9, Lee Smart 7+2, Rusty Harrison 5+1, Ludvig Lindgren R/R.
NEWPORT: Leigh Lanham 16, Chris Kerr 14+1, Paul Fry 7, James Holder 5+1, Jonas Andersson 1, Marek Mroz 0, Jordan Frampton R/R.
