BRUMMIES 53 WORKINGTON 39

Sunday July 12, 2009
RICHARD Sweetman was the hero once again with a sensational paid maximum at reserve as the Brummies overcame Workington in Sunday's top-of-the-table showdown.

Sweetman, whose points scoring at Perry Barr of late has been truly remarkable, followed up his paid-20 haul earlier in the week with a full house from seven rides in an incident-filled match against the Comets.

And the performance of Jason Lyons was also worthy of the highest praise, as the skipper surged to a maximum of his own with six straight wins for an 18-point total.

Lyons and Sweetman could do no wrong all night, but almost every rider in the meeting was involved in some kind of drama, with a succession of falls and problems.

Tomasz Piszcz was unable to continue due to shoulder ligament damage from a crash in Heat 10, and the Comets' Adrian Rymel did not complete the meeting either as he suffered the effects of a Heat 3 fall.

Visiting captain Kevin Doolan, meanwhile, received a shock of a different kind when he attempted to shut down his machine after his throttle had jammed open as he crossed the finishing line of Heat 11!

Brummies opened an early ten-point lead thanks to three 5-1s in a four-race burst, and the majority of mid-meeting heats were shared, with Sweetman superbly overcoming Rymel in the re-run of Heat 10.

The youngster made sure of the win by taking Heat 14 to wrap up his paid-21 point haul, and Ludvig Lindgren's third place moved the Brummies closer to taking all three points.

A Workington 5-1 in the last race would have seen then snatch a consolation, but Lyons superbly accounted for Doolan on the first bend and Lindgren, mounted on Sweetman's bike after his own engine had blown, moved into second place for a 5-1 to the delight of the crowd.
