COMPTON WINS AS BRUMMIES ROAR BACK

Wednesday March 21, 2007
ANDRE Compton put his name into the record books with victory in the Alan Hunt Memorial Trophy - after a hugely successful opening night at Perry Barr.

The Sheffield captain reeled off five straight wins to take the title ahead of rising star James Wright and experienced Australian Craig Watson, who won the very first race of the night.

For some time it looked as though Compton would be contesting the trophy with Somerset's Magnus Zetterstrom, who matched the Tigers man with three wins from his first three rides.

But Zetterstrom was surprisingly beaten into third place in Heat 14 and Compton took full advantage in the next race - after a scare when he was outgated by Aidan Collins and the Brummies rider fell under his challenge.

Compton only required a second place from Heat 20 to be sure of the title, but in the event he won that race as well to finish with a full house.

James Wright showed his talent with a fine display as he ended up in second place on 12 points, whilst Craig Watson won three races and finished with 11.

Ronnie Correy, who enjoyed plenty of local support due to his years with Wolverhampton, could well have been on the rostrum but for a mechanical failure at the very end of his fourth ride which dropped him from first to third.

The American finished on ten points, the same total as three other riders including the top Brummie Jason Lyons.

Of the other home riders, there was a particularly encouraging show from young Lee Smart, who made some fast starts and showed the potential to be a strong reserve at Premier League level.

The new track provided several fine heats of action and will get better and better as the weeks go by, and the meeting ran smoothly apart from a hitch with the starting gate before Heat 3 which led to several false starts - but this was resolved and the meeting was closed shortly after 9.50pm.

SCORES: Andre Compton 15, James Wright 12, Craig Watson 11, Jason Lyons 10, Ronnie Correy 10, Stanislaw Burza 10, Magnus Zetterstrom 10, Ulrich Ostergaard 8, Brent Werner 8, Phil Morris 6, Lee Smart 5, Ritchie Hawkins 4, Emiliano Sanchez 4, Aidan Collins 4, Paul Pickering 3, Ben Powell 0.
