BIRMINGHAM finished off their northern tour with a magnificent 46-44 victory at Newcastle on Sunday evening.

Skipper Jason Lyons and Craig Watson were the last heat heroes when they picked up the important three race points needed for victory, but the real star of the show for the BRC Roofing Brummies was 17-year-old Jack Roberts who top-scored with a superb 12+2.

After the teams exchanged 4-2s in the first couple of races it was the Diamonds who opened up a four-point lead with a 5-1 in heat 5. The Brummies, however, then hit straight back when Watson and Roberts raced to a shock five-pointer over Josef Franc in heat 6.

Five more from Lyons and Lee Smart in heat 7 put the midlanders into a 23-19 lead, but parity was soon restored when the Geordies raced to a maximum of their own in heat 9.

With Lyons excluded in heat 10 it saw Newcastle take the opportunity to open up a four-point advantage with successive 4-2s. But back came the Brummies again and a 4-2 from Lyons and Roberts in heat 12 kept them in the mix as they approached the closing stages.

With three races remaining the Brummies still trailed 37-35, but they then put themselves in pole position when Watson and Kyle Legault held off a determined Christian Henry, for what proved to be a crucial 5-1 in heat 13.

Jason King then took the chequered flag in a shared heat 14 ahead of Smart and Roberts to take the meeting to a last heat decider. In the finale, King held off Lyons’ efforts for the race win, but with Watson comfortably third ahead of George Stancl, the ensuing 3-3 was enough to give the Brummies a valuable hard-fought away victory.
