BERWICK 58 BRUMMIES 34

Saturday July 19, 2008
JASON Lyons was top man for the Brummies once again, but he couldn’t stop them from going down to a 58-34 defeat at Berwick on Saturday evening.

The Brummies skipper scored 11 points and had some decent backing from Craig Watson 9 and Kyle Legault 7, but the Bandits had the advantage with their all-round strength and ran out comfortable winners.

Birmingham kept it tight early on with Legault, James Birkinshaw and Lyons all winning their opening rides, but Berwick finally went ahead with a 5-1 in heat 4 from Scott Smith and Norbert Magosi.

The Bandits upped the tempo with five more in heat 5, and a 4-2 from Adrian Rymel and Tony Atkin in heat 6 put them into a 23-13 lead.

With the Brummies ten-points in arrears Lyons then donned the back and white helmet for double points in heat 7, and the Aussie earned his team six-points as he shot from the start to win the race ahead of Magosi and Paul Clews.

The midlanders lost Birkinshaw to a suspected ankle injury in heat 8 and to complete their woes, Berwick then teamed up for a succession of 5-1s to race into an unassailable 56-30 lead with one race remaining.

Watson and Legault restored some pride with a 4-2 in heat 15, but Graham Drury’s men must now re-group for the final leg of their northern tour at Newcastle on Sunday evening.

BERWICK 58: Michal Makovsky 12, Adrian Rymel 11, Paul Clews 9+1, Norbert Magosi 8+3, Scott Smith 8+1, Tero Arnio 6+4, Tony Atkin 4+2

BIRMINGHAM 34: Jason Lyons 11, Craig Watson 9, Kyle Legault 7, James Birkinshaw 3, Jack Hargreaves 2, Lee Smart 1, Jack Roberts 1
