EDINBURGH 52 BRUMMIES 29

Friday July 18, 2008
THE Brummies were very much second best on a damp Friday night in Scotland when they went down to a 52-29 defeat at Edinburgh.

Rain had fallen on the Armadale track in the days prior to the meeting and worsening conditions through the evening meant that proceedings had to be cut short with two races remaining.

Skipper Jason Lyons was top man for Birmingham with a hard-earned 12-point haul, but it was the Monarchs who adapted better to the tricky conditions, with all seven of their riders paid for at least 8-points apiece.

Kyle Legault did get the visitors off to winning start with a victory in a shared opening race, but Edinburgh hit the front with a 5-1 in heat 2 - and it was a lead they never surrendered.

Four points from Matt Wethers and Aaron Summers in heat 4 further increased the Monarchs advantage, and a series of quick-fire 5-1s from the home side put them into an unassailable 40-14 lead after nine races.

The meeting was effectively over as a contest now, but the travelling Brummies army did have something to cheer when Lyons (tactical ride) just got the better Carl Stonehewer and Derek Sneddon in heat 10, with his six-point victory reducing the deficit to 43-20.

Lyons took the chequered flag again in a shared heat 12, followed by a Legault victory in heat 13, but the meeting was finally brought to a halt because of deteriorating track conditions with two races remaining. The result, however, will stand.

EDINBURGH 52: Derek Sneddon 8+2, Carl Stonehewer 8+1, Thomas H Jonasson 8+1, Aaron Summers 8+1, Andrew Tully 7+3, Ryan Fisher 7+1, Matt Wethers 6+2
