BRUMMIES STUN STARS IN TROPHY SHOCK

Friday April 11, 2008
BRAVE Birmingham pulled off a stunning 55-39 Premier Trophy win at King’s Lynn to make themselves firm favourites to reach the semi-finals as group winners.

Graham Drury’s side have now won two of their away meetings – and with an extra point available for wins on the road this season they now find themselves in a great position.

Lee Smart was sensational at reserve for the Perry Barr side and Adam Roynon continued his great run of form – but this was all about a team effort.

The meeting was delayed and track conditions were not as they usually are at the Norfolk Arena. This appeared to play straight into Birmingham’s hands.

Lynn skipper Tomas Topinka went off 15 metres in Heat 9 for a double point tactical ride. However, the former Grand Prix rider was stuck at the back and only picked up a point when BRC Roofing Brummies guest Ben Barker was forced to retire and Smart claimed a vital victory.

A 5-1 from Roynon and another guest, Mark Burrows, in Heat 11 put Birmingham firmly in command, and despite Doolan taking six points from a tactical ride in heat 12, the visitors again minimised the damage, by taking the minor placings.

A Lyons and Smart 5-1 in Heat 13 secured the victory, on a night where Birmingham’s fighting spirit came to the fore.

KING’S LYNN: Tomas Topinka 14+1, Kevin Doolan 14+1, John Oliver 5, Simon Lambert 3+1, Shaun Tacey 3, Kozza Smith 0, Rusty Harrison 0,
BRC ROOFING BRUMIES: Lee Smart 17+2, Jason Lyons 14, Adam Roynon 11+3, Ben Barker 6+1, Mark Burrows 4+3, Jack Hargreaves 3+1, Kyle Legault R/R.
