ADVANTAGE BRUMMIES!

Tuesday October 02, 2007
BIRMINGHAM'S speedway stars have one foot in the Young Shield semi-final after a 47-43 win at Mildenhall last night - and they are looking to finish the job at Perry Barr tonight (7.45pm).

Skipper Jason Lyons was in inspired form for the Mercom Water Products-backed side at one of his former tracks as he pulled off a stunning 15-point maximum.

Lee Smart provided some strength in depth with a fine performance at reserve netting 10+3 as the inury-hit Brummies covered well for Henning Bager, Henrik Moller and Ben Powell.

And they had to do it without team manager Graham Drury who failed to arrive at West Row because of motorway chaos with part of the M6 closed. Peterborough's Trevor Swales quickly agreed to deputise.

Moller is hopeful of a return to the side tonight after havng physio on his leg injury band Paul Clews is set to continue at reserve in place of Powell with the rider-replacement facility in operation for Bager.

Should Birmingham complete the job as expected tonight, they are planning to stage the semi-final at Perry Barr next Wednesday, October 10.
