BRUMMIES 60 RYE HOUSE 30

Wednesday May 25, 2016
INJURY hit Birmingham pulled off arguably their most impressive result of the season with a 60-30 demolition of Rye House.

Already without club captain Tom Perry through a broken collarbone, the Surestop Brummies were reduced to just five riders early on when Tom Bacon was forced to withdraw after a horrible crash in heat three.

Rye House racer George Hunter lifted down the back straight and with Bacon about to pass up the inside, the two tangled and Bacon was taken to hospital with a suspected fractured foot.

Team manager Graham Drury rallied his troops during a lengthy delay and his depleted side responded with a showing full of character and determination.

The Brummies registered an astonishing nine maximum heat advantages as they raced to their second biggest triumph of the season.

The win extends the side's unbeaten run to twelve meetings and pulls them three points clear at the top of the Travel Plus National League table, much to the delight of boss Drury.

"I'm so proud of this bunch of lads and it is a pleasure to work with such a professional, determined group of young riders," said Drury.

"To go down to five riders and pull of a result like that deserves a huge amount of credit.

"It really was a horrific looking incident that Tom was involved in the lads were concerned about him.

"It was important that I got them together, fired them up and they showed a great deal of character and true class once again.

"Danyon (Hume), Darryl (Ritchings) and Zach (Wajtknecht) were instrumental but I have to give a special mention to our reserves.

"The two Jacks (Parkinson-Blackburn and Smith) were both outstanding and to get through seven rides with scores like their's at their ages is remarkable.

"It's another huge result for us and I'm so proud of the lads.

"Naturally our thoughts are with Tom Bacon and we will keep supporters updated as soon as we hear anything."

All five remaining riders shared the Ductair Electrics Ltd Rider of the Night Award for the team spirit showed on another mature display from the Brummies.

Graham Drury's side are back at Perry Barr next Wednesday (June 1) against Eastbourne - the club will be revealing details of their 'Half Term Special' in the next few days.
