BRUMMIES 45 BELLE VUE 39

Wednesday May 18, 2016
BIRMINGHAM pulled clear at the top of the National League with a 45-39 win against Belle Vue - but are sweating on the fitness of skipper Tom Perry.

The 23-year-old sustained a suspected broken collarbone in a horrible looking, first bend crash in heat 15 which brought the meeting to a premature end with the result standing.

The third tier clash swung one way then the other in the opening stages before the visitors took the lead in heat five.

However, a great response from the Surestop Brummies saw them register six 4-2's in seven races - a sequence which earned them three more National League points.

But the Colts left Perry Barr with something to show for their efforts as they snatched a consolation point courtesy of their 5-1 in heat 13 from Matt Williamson and Lee Payne.

It was another solid showing from the Graham Drury's side as they extended their unbeaten run to 11 meetings.

Said Drury: "It was another battling performance from the lads and we're really pleased to get another win on the board.

"Belle Vue had a real trump card at reserve in Dan Bewley; what a special talent he is and what a future ahead of him he's got.

"But from our point of view, everyone contributed some important points and it was another great show of character from the team.

"Naturally we send our best wishes to Tom - but we know he'll bounce back.

"Injuries are part and parcel of the sport unfortunately but we hope Tom's isn't as serious as first feared.

"We'll await word from the hospital before making any decision on the team ahead of next Wednesday's home clash against Rye House."

Danyon Hume top scored for the Brummies on another night to remember for the 19-year-old as he also secured the Ductair Electrics Ltd Rider of the Night award.

Tom Bacon, Darryl Ritchings and Zach Wajtknecht all picked up race wins as they chipped in with seven points apiece as did Tom Perry prior to his final heat crash.

Jack Parkinson-Blackburn put in another encouraging display at reserve while Jack Smith picked himself up after being controversially excluded in his first outing to improve as the meeting went on.

BIRMINGHAM 45: Danyon Hume 9, Darryl Ritchings 7+2, Zach Wajtknecht 7+1, Tom Bacon 7, Tom Perry 7, Jack Parksinson-Blackburn 5+1, Jack Smith 3.

BELLE VUE 39: Dan Bewley 17, Lee Payne 8+2, Matt Williamson 8+1, Rob Shuttleworth 5, Joe Lawlor 1, Tom Woolley 0, David Holt R/R.
