BRUMMIES 47 KENT 43

Wednesday July 15, 2015
BIRMINGHAM pulled off a late comeback to secure a hard-fought 47-43 win over Kent in a last heat decider.

The Surestop Brummies were trailing by four points after eight heats and still found themselves two points behind the Kings with three races remaining.

But two race advantages from the duo of Adam Ellis and Zach Wajtknecht in heats 13 and 15 saw the Brummies turn the meeting around and maintain their 100 per cent National League record.

Birmingham Team Manager Graham Drury said: "What a classy showing that was from our riders; to suffer so much bad luck and show the character, grit and determination to bounce back and get another win really is quite remarkable.

"In the opening half of the meeting I genuinely felt it wasn't going to be our night but during the interval we re-grouped and got things right when it mattered most.

"I always felt this was a potential banana skin, but you have to give Kent great credit for playing their part in another superb advert for the National League and they fully deserved to be the first team to leave Perry Barr with a consolation league point."

Wajtknecht top-scored once again for the Brummies, picking up three heat wins and combining with Ellis in heat 15 for a crucial 5-1.

Sam Chapman looked much more comfortable and picked up his highest score of the season as he reached double-figures.

No.1 Ellis bounced back superbly after suffering two heavy falls in his opening two rides by reeling off three straight race wins.

Adam Kirby suffered his fair share of bad luck, but still managed to chip-in with a vital contribution once again from reserve.

Alex Wilson looked sharp with another encouraging performance at No.2 while Robert Parker played his part by picking up a crucial paid win in heat two.

The Brummies now travel to Coventry on Friday in what promises to be an enthralling encounter between the two Midlands clubs.

BIRMINGHAM 47: Zach Wajtknecht 14+1, Sam Chapman 10, Adam Ellis 9, Adam Kirby 7+2, Alex Wilson 5+1, Robert Parker 2+1, Josh Bates R/R.

KENT 43: Tom Bacon 10+1, Ben Morley 10, Danny Ayres 9+1, James Shanes 8, Ben Basford 4+2, Danno Verge 2, Jamie Couzins R/R.
