BRUMMIES 51 MILDENHALL 38

Wednesday July 01, 2015
BIRMINGHAM battled to a hard-fought 51-38 victory against Mildenhall - but their win may have come at a cost.

Captain Tom Perry, who had only dropped one point from three rides going into Heat 13, was taken out by Mildenhall's Dan Halsey in an unfortunate fourth bend incident.

Perry was taken to the local hospital for a number of x-rays where the early diagnosis is a broken wrist.

But Team Manager Graham Drury is remaining positive and hopes the injury news is not as bad as first feared.

Said Drury: "It was a nasty looking incident and with the form Tom has been in, it's a real shame - but let's just pray things aren't too bad.

"We lost Adam Kirby after two rides as well and that meant it was another whole team effort to dig deep and get the league points.

"It's great to be ten-points clear at the top and we'll take our recent momentum into next Wednesday's meeting at King's Lynn."

Teenage sensation Zach Wajtknecht raced to his first ever five ride, fifteen-point maximum on a faultless night for the 17-year-old.

Adam Ellis was only denied a paid maximum himself when mechanical gremlins crept in in his second outing when leading.

Guest reserve Charley Powell looked really impressive on his National League debut and potentially put himself in the frame for the No.6 race jacket on a full time basis.

Tom Perry pulled off some spectacular outside blasts before being forced to withdraw while Sam Chapman and Alex Wilson both rode well and once again deserved even more points than they secured.

Adam Kirby was also forced to withdraw after a heavy crash in his opening ride.

BIRMINGHAM 51: Zach Wajtknecht 15, Adam Ellis 11+1, Charley Powell 8+1, Tom Perry 8, Sam Chapman 5+1, Alex Wilson 4+1, Adam Kirby 0.

MILDENHALL 38: Connor Mountain 11+1, Tom Bacon 10+1, Dan Halsey 7, Connor Coles 5+1, Stefan Farnaby 4, Luke Ruddick 1, Jack Kingston R/R.

National League points: Birmingham 3 Mildenhall 0
