EASTBOURNE 50 BRUMMIES 39

Sunday June 21, 2015
BIRMINGHAM'S Knockout Cup hopes are over after a 50-39 defeat at Eastbourne.

It was the Surestop Brummies’ first defeat in just over three months and ends an impressive run of seven straight wins.

A brave display on a tough evening for the Brummies, saw them lose by just six-points on aggregate (92-86) and their eleven point second leg defeat was also the closest any team has run the Eagles at Arlington so far this season.

Team Manager Graham Drury says it’s important to focus on the positives going into Wednesday’s crucial, top of the table, derby clash with Cradley.

Said Drury: “Obviously it’s disappointing to be out of the Knockout cup, but for me there is a lot we can take out of today’s meeting.

“We battled all the way despite only having five riders for the majority of the meeting and there’s certainly no disgrace in the scoreline whatsoever.

“Adam Ellis was in a class of his own again, Tom (Perry) enjoyed his best ever meeting at Eastbourne and Zach (Wajtknecht) had some really good rides too.

“Our lower end struggled points wise, but today, on a specialist track like that, it’s all part of the learning process for them and hopefully a meeting like that will stand us all in good stead for the Cradley meeting as well as the rest of the season.”

Ellis continued his spectacular form, racing to a fine, five-ride full 15 point maximum.

He was backed-up well by fellow heat-leaders Tom Perry and Zach Wajtknecht who both secured paid double-figures a-piece once again.

Adam Kirby endured a tough afternoon, which started with two falls, while Alex Wilson found things difficult in the main body of the team.

Harvie Banks withdrew after just one ride on his return to the Brummies line-up after an awkward spill in heat two.

EASTBOURNE 50: Matt Bates 9+2, David Mason 8+1, Bradley Wilson-Dean 8, Marc Owen 7+1, Kelsey Dugard 7+1, Richard Andrews 6+1, Georgie Wood 5+4.

BIRMINGHAM 39: Adam Ellis 15, Tom Perry 10, Zach Wajtknecht 9+1, Adam Kirby 3, Alex Wilson 1, Harvie Banks 1, Sam Chapman r/r.
