CRADLEY 55 BRUMMIES 38

Tuesday October 07, 2014
BIRMINGHAM suffered defeat on their return to the track as they went down 55-38 against in-form Cradley in the West Midlands Trophy at Monmore Green.

A strong Brummies side put in a brave display as they attempted to condemn the Heathens to their first defeat on home soil since 2011.

They unfortunately faded in the closing stages as the hosts emerged victorious – yet it remained a memorable night as the Perry Barr outfit returned to the track following their sad closure earlier in the year.

A large contingent of loyal Brummies fans were treated to some entertaining action as they made the trip across the West Midlands.

Team boss Phil Morris admitted it was simply brilliant to see the famous Red and Yellow race jacket back on track despite their defeat.

Said Morris: “It was good to see the Birmingham race jacket back on track, and it was good for the fans to get to see their club riding again.

“Obviously the result wasn’t what we were hoping for, but it was an enjoyable meeting with some good racing and it was good to see plenty of Birmingham supporters on the terraces watching speedway again.”

Simon Lambert, who proved hugely popular amongst Brummies fans during his spell at reserve this season, top scored with a determined display – racing to a tactical ride win in heat 12 on his way to double figures.

Middle order man Brendan Johnson also put in a strong showing whilst Luke Chessell and Adam Roynon recorded classy race wins.

However, Roynon was hit by bike troubles as he endured a tough night whilst fellow heat-leader Ben Wilson also struggled as he hit the deck on three separate occasions.

Reserves Adam Extance and Chris Widman put in creditable showings at reserve against their strong Heathens counterparts – although it was not enough to see the Brummies come out on top as they searched for a perfect return to the track.

The result was ultimately the only missing ingredient on what was otherwise an enjoyable night between two of speedway’s most historic clubs.
