BRUMMIES SUFFER ISLAND DEFEAT

Thursday August 02, 2007
BIRMINGHAM were very much second best on the Isle of Wight on Thursday night, as the Brummies went down to a 60-33 Premier league defeat against the Islanders.

Jason Lyons top-scored once again for Birmingham with 12 points, but the Islanders had too much strength in depth for the Midlanders. Jason Bunyan both led the way with 12 (paid 14) for the Island club and was ably backed by Chris Holder with 12 (paid 13), but the big two had plenty of backing all down the line with Cory Gathercole next best with 10 (paid 11).

The Islanders are a strong team at home on their big Smallbrook track and after gaining a heat advantage in each of the opening six races, they soon built up a healthy 26-10 lead.

Heat 7, however, was a better one for the Brummies, with Lyons nominated as a tactical ride taking the chequered flag ahead of Glenn Phillips and Andrew Bargh.

Ben Powell and Manuel Hauzinger quickly followed that up with a 4-2 in heat 8, but the Islanders responded instantly with two 5-1’s and the match was now more-or-less beyond Birmingham’s reach.

The Brummies did strike back with an Ostergaard and Powell 4-2 in heat 11 to make the score 43-26, but that was as close as Birmingham got, as Isle of Wight finished with two 5-1s and a 4-2 in the final few heats to run out convincing 60-33 winners.

ISLE OF WIGHT 60: Chris Holder 12+1, Jason Bunyan 12+1, Cory Gathercole 10+1, Kryzstof Stojanowski 9+1, Glenn Phillips 9+1, Chris Johnson 5+1, Andrew Bargh 3+1

BIRMINGHAM 33: Jason Lyons 12, Ben Powell 6, Manuel Hauzinger 6, Ulrich Ostergaard 5, Lee Smart 4, Henrik Moller 0, Emiliano Sanchez 0
