BRUMMIES 46 WOLVERHAMPTON 44

Wednesday May 07, 2014
BIRMINGHAM enjoyed last gasp derby delight as they snatched a thrilling 46-44 victory over local rivals Wolverhampton at Perry Barr.

A faultless 15 point maximum from inspirational skipper Danny King led the Selco Brummies to their second win of the season as their upturn in form continues.

Having led for the majority of the meeting, the home side conceded a 5-1 in the penultimate race to set up a nervy last heat decider with both teams level.

Yet the magnificent King flew from the start to take the chequered flag whilst partner Daniel Nermark secured third place to give his side a memorable victory.

And team boss Jack Lee was delighted with a tremendous team effort just a week after they grabbed an unlikely away point at Poole.

Said Lee: "We knew it was going to be tight and it was a bit too tight for comfort really, but in the end we came away with the win which is the main thing so we are happy.

"Danny (King) was absolutely brilliant and a lot more like what we expect from him - hopefully tonight can be a turning point for him.

"The Poole result last week was fantastic and now we've had another good result, so hopefully we can push on from here and start to build some momentum."

Whilst King simply stole the show from the No.3 position, he received able support from several areas as the Brummies put in an encouraging performance.

Swedish star Nermark stormed to three race wins with a classy display - whilst Adam Skornicki helped them form a potent top three with a strong showing in the tough No.1 spot.

Returning Nico Covatti and all-action Cornishman Ben Barker both battled hard to make useful contributions whilst a hard-earned point for reserve Simon Lambert on a difficult night also proved crucial.

BIRMINGHAM 46: Danny King 15, Daniel Nermark 10, Paul Starke 8+2, Adam Skornicki 7, Nico Covatti 3, Ben Barker 2, Simon Lambert 1.

WOLVERHAMPTON 44: Piotr Pawlicki 9+1, Ricky Wells 8+1, Joe Jacobs 7+1, Tai Woffinden 6+1, Ty Proctor 6+1, Ashley Morris 4+1, Jacob Thorssell 4.

Elite League points: Birmingham 2 Wolverhampton 1
