GREAT AFTERNOON FOR SKIPPER DANNY

Sunday August 11, 2013
DANNY King’s benefit meeting hit exactly the right balance between racing and fun as the Brummies skipper celebrated ten years in the sport.

The track action was entertaining with plenty of close battles, including between several riders who will be vying for major league honours later in the season.

King’s Birmingham team took a narrow victory over Peterborough with the two sides proving to be evenly-matched throughout the evening, and they went into the final race level before Jason Doyle, who dropped just one point, confirmed victory as Ryan Fisher was left at the back.

King himself admitted he was relieved just to get racing given the organisational stress of a meeting such as this, and he showed plenty of determination in his heats including a stunning swoop from last to first coming off turn two in his third outing.

It was also a useful comeback event for Chris Harris, making a rapid return from a broken collarbone, although he was denied a race win in Heat 7 after doing the hard work to make it around the boards as Martin Smolinski, racing for Peterborough, snatched the verdict on the line.

Coventry and Wolverhampton’s scrap for third place saw the Bees using tactical rides in an attempt to finish ahead of their rivals, but Scott Nicholls was passed by Adam Skornicki off the last bend in Heat 12 after finding his way blocked by Ben Barker and Smolinski.

That led to Mick Horton ‘buying’ a second tactical ride from referee Craig Ackroyd, and Edward Kennett’s third place in Heat 15 took them two points clear of the Monmore side.

There were also match races between Chris Louis and Sam Ermolenko, the American winning the first in a most respectable time of 61.31, whilst Louis clocked 61.81 in the third – having initially been awarded a near track record mark in his previous outing in order to win a bet with Cameron Heeps!
