BRUMMIES 57 WOLVES 33

Wednesday August 07, 2013
WITH Birmingham missing two riders due to injury and Wolverhampton’s top two being Perry Barr specialists, a tight match was widely predicted – but the reality was nothing of the sort.

The Brummies were simply too good for their near neighbours on the night, and whereas in previous Second City encounters late 5-1s from Freddie Lindgren and Tai Woffinden have snatched a point for their side, this time they came as mild consolation.

It was a display from the home side’s regulars which again emphasised their title credentials, and most impressive was the way in which they refused to allow the Wolves big guns to dominate following Freddie Lindgren’s Heat 1 win.

Much of that was down to the outstanding Danny King/Ben Barker combination, which stormed to maximum points over Lindgren when the Swede went for double in Heat 5 in an attempt to break Birmingham’s early momentum.

And although Woffinden won Heat 6 when not being nominated for double, he couldn’t repeat the feat in Heat 9 as he was outgated by Barker, with Ludvig Lindgren not quite doing enough to prevent King from flying around the outside to join his partner.

Martin Smolinski also took points off both top visitors, combining with guest Nicolai Klindt for a shock 5-1 over Freddie Lindgren in Heat 11, the German having also produced the ride of the night four races earlier when he rounded Adam Skornicki and then immediately turned inside Ricky Wells on the first and second bends.

Klindt and Josh Auty gave the Brummies some consistent scoring lower down, which was in stark contrast to the visiting reserves who failed to beat an opponent in eleven races between them.

The final race was awarded after two laps when Jason Doyle piled into the fence on turn four, but he was able to quickly walk away as Birmingham celebrated their return to the top of the table.
