EASTBOURNE 51 BRUMMIES 41

Monday July 29, 2013
BIRMINGHAM are sweating on the fitness of GB star Chris Harris after a spectacular last race spill in last night's defeat at Eastbourne.

Harris was sent crashing from his machine at high speed in the last race and landed awkwardly.

He was badly winded and walked away with a suspected shoulder injury which will be looked at today.

Harris had previously romped to four straight wins including a brilliant Heat 13 effort when he beat both Bjarne Pedersen in spectacular style.

And Heat 15 was just as exciting as the Brummies needed a 3-3 to take a league point back to Perry Barr. Former Brummies man Pedersen thwarted the efforts of his old side with a trademark fast start but was chased hard by Harris and impressive skipper Danny King.

Danish debut boy Mikkel Michelsen completed a fairytale start to his UK career by joining Pedersen for a 5-1 which handed Eastbourne all three league points.

Martin Smolinski and Nico Covatti both struggled badly and managed just a point between them and Josh Auty gained a 5-1 in one heat but couldn't offer much more as Birmingham suffered only their third defeat of the season.

Boss Phil Morris said: "It's disappointing but it's a rare defeat and we have to move on from here.

"It just wasn't our night but we gave it our best and we hope Bomber (Harris) will be ok."

EASTBOURNE: Timo Lahti 13, Mikkel Michelsen 11+2, Bjarne Pedersen 10+1, Cameron Woodward 7, Kim Nilsson 6+3, Simon Gustafsson 4+1, Lukas Dryml R/R.

BIRMINGHAM: Chris Harris 12, Danny King 10+1, Jason Doyle 9, Ben Barker 6, Josh Auty 3+1, Martin Smolinski 1, Nico Covatti 0.
