BRUMMIES 54 POOLE 40

Wednesday June 19, 2013
BIRMINGHAM showed little sympathy for Poole’s continued problems as they boosted their title challenge with another three-point haul at Perry Barr.

It was the first time the Brummies had taken a win over the Pirates since their elevation to the top flight, after two draws at Wimborne Road, and their 54-point total was another show of all-round strength given that No.1 and captain Danny King was reduced to an uncharacteristic one-point score.

But King’s troubles, which included falls first when he clipped team-mate Ben Barker in Heat 1 and another when he was the victim of bunching in Heat 10, were more than cancelled out by the Pirates’ woe, which saw them end an incident-strewn meeting without both reserves.

Tomas H Jonasson was clearly the bigger loss, especially as his crash came in his first outing when he slammed into the turn three fence when attempting an ambitious outside overtaking move.

That left a struggling Dawid Stachyra to take extra rides, but the Pole didn’t complete the contest either as he suffered a foot injury when he hooked up with Josh Auty at high speed going into bend three in Heat 11 – and with the Pirates already operating rider-replacement, it left them with no representative at all in the penultimate race.

Birmingham swiftly took charge of the meeting with three 5-1s in a row in Heats 2, 3 and 4, the second of which saw a terrific battle between the home riders and Przemek Pawlicki before both Jason Doyle and Martin Smolinski overhauled early leader Rohan Tungate.

Chris Holder did his best to keep Poole in the contest, including winning a tactical ride in Heat 5, a race which saw Tungate disqualified for locking up on turn four and causing Doyle to fall.

Holder received support from Maciej Janowski, who improved as the meeting went on, although the Pole and colleague Pawlicki were powerless to prevent a fired-up Ben Barker from rounding them both in thrilling style in Heat 10 – Janowski having been overtaken on the inside by Smolinski when taking a tactical ride one race earlier.

Pawlicki saved his best for last by passing Smolinski to take Heat 12 after Stachyra’s crash, and a 5-1 from Holder and Janowski in Heat 13 was Poole’s best result of the night, prior to the Brummies’ uncontested 5-0.

But an encouraging-sized crowd on a sunny evening had one more superb race to enjoy as Holder was caught out in Heat 15 when trying to team-ride with Janowski, and his 18-point maximum was wrecked as Barker and Smolinski surged either side of him, all of which rather summed up the respective fortunes of the two clubs at present.
