BRUMMIES 45 COVENTRY 45

Thursday October 18, 2012
BIRMINGHAM’S 2012 season is over after they crashed out of the Elite League Knockout Cup despite a hard-fought 45-45 draw against Coventry at Perry Barr.

Needing to overturn a six-point deficit after the first leg at Brandon, 5-1s in Heats 2 and 5 for the visitors instantly put the Selco Brummies on the back-foot.

They kept their hopes alive with a maximum of their own courtesy of Ben Barker and Sebastian Ulamek in Heat 9, but they could not quite do enough despite levelling things up late on and went down to a 96-90 aggregate defeat.

Skipper Danny King led the side sensationally to bag 14 points, whilst Nico Covatti added Chris Harris to his growing list of Perry Barr scalps on his way to double-figures.

Barker also performed well from the No.3 race jacket, but Josh Auty endured a nightmare meeting with a fall and two retirements.

In the end, ten last places cost the home side dearly, and they finish the campaign wondering what could have been having been knocked out of both the Elite League Play-Offs and the Knockout Cup at the semi-final stage.

King said: “It's a shame. The boys were so close but it's not quite enough.

“The track was tricky but it's the same for everyone.

“We've just got to be happy and reflect on what we've done this year. I think we'd take it, it's been a good season for the club.”

BIRMINGHAM 45: Danny King 16, Nicolas Covatti 11+1, Ben Barker 10, Martin Smolinski 4+2, Sebastian Ulamek 3+1, Josh Auty 1, Bjarne Pedersen R/R.

COVENTRY 45: Chris Harris 10+1, Michal Szczepaniak 9+1, Scott Nicholls 8+2, Aaron Summers 8+1, Adam Roynon 5+1, Kenni Larsen 4, Eddie Kennett 1+1.

Coventry win 96-90 on aggregate.
