BRUMMIES 43 POOLE 47

BIRMINGHAM are still in with a great chance of qualifying for the Elite League Speedway play-offs – despite a 47-43 defeat by Poole on Monday.

And Selco Brummies boss Phil Morris admitted he had mixed emotions after seeing his side push the Dorset side to a thrilling last heat decider.

The result now means the Perry Barr side can even afford to lose at home to Swindon by up to 12 points on Wednesday to qualify!

They made a nightmare start against the table-topping Pirates going 10-2 down after only two races – but they staged a brilliant fightback to give the visitors a real scare.

Said Morris: “There are mixed emotions I would say. I am pretty pleased with the boys and the fighting spirit they have shown to only lose by four points, but I am disappointed by the first two races where we gave away a big 8-2.

“Take those two out of the equation and I am definitely happy with it.

“We have really got to hit the ground running against Swindon on Wednesday and we have to get a good start.”

Birmingham took the lead for the first time in the meeting courtesy of a Ben Barker and Danny King maximum in heat 9.

But Poole hit back with a vital 5-1 in Heat 13, before a further 4-2 following a Barker fall in the penultimate race gave them a four-point victory which ensures they will top the table for the 3rd consecutive year.

Barker impressed all night long - defeating Chris Holder twice and Darcy Ward once - whilst skipper King and Sebastian Ulamek added useful scores.

Josh Auty continues to look at home in the no.2 jacket, plus Nicolas Covatti once again exceeded expectations from reserve.

However, Bjarne Pedersen struggled to make any impact against his former club, and with Martin Smolinski also disappointing they fell agonisingly short.

SELCO BRUMMIES: Ben Barker 9+2, Danny King 8, Josh Auty 7+1, Sebastian Ulamek 7+1, Nicolas Covatti 6+2, Bjarne Pedersen 3+1, Martin Smolinski 3.

POOLE: Darcy Ward 13+1, Chris Holder 12+1, Krzysztof Kasprzak 10, Linus Eklof 7+1, Ludvig Lindgren 3, Ricky Kling 2+1, Piotr Pawlicki R/R.
