EASTBOURNE 54 BRUMMIES 38

Saturday July 21, 2012
BIRMINGHAM were left empty-handed on their travels as they went down to a 54-38 defeat at Eastbourne on Saturday.

It was a lop-sided showing from the Selco Brummies at Arlington with middle-order duo Danny King and Ben Barker in fine form, but support being lacking from both the top and bottom of the order.

Bjarne Pedersen was unable to shine on his old home circuit and Sebastian Ulamek also struggled at one of his least-favourite venues, and it was the Eagles who gave the more solid all-round performance.

Barker, though, was a big bright spot as he gave his best Elite League display for some time, the Cornishman being beaten in only one of his five rides – but unfortunately for the Brummies, that came when he was going for double-points in his third outing.

King was more successful when he took a tactical ride in Heat 12, his six-pointer being one of three race wins on the night, but it was largely damage limitation as Eastbourne led 42-23 at that stage.

The home side had taken control of the meeting with successive 5-1s in Heats 4, 5 and 6 after King and Barker had given the Brummies an early lead, and following a 4-2 to the visitors in Heat 7 another burst of Eagles scoring followed with three more 5-1s in four races only interrupted by a Simon Gustafsson fall in Heat 9.

King’s tactical ride win gave the Brummies the faintest of chances of salvaging a league point, but Pedersen and Ulamek conceded maximum points in Heat 13 as the home side made sure of all three – although there was a consolation Birmingham 5-1 in the last with King winning and Barker superbly making his way past Lewis Bridger and Joonas Kylmakorpi for second place.

EASTBOURNE 54: Timo Lahti 12+2, Joonas Kylmakorpi 10+2, Lewis Bridger 10+2, Cameron Woodward 9, Lukas Dryml 8+1, Simon Gustafsson 4+1, Denis Gizatullin 1+1.

BIRMINGHAM 38: Danny King 14, Ben Barker 10+2, Bjarne Pedersen 4+1, Josh Auty 4, Tomasz Piszcz 2+1, Martin Smolinski 2, Sebastian Ulamek 2.
