PETERBOROUGH 51 BRUMMIES 42

BIRMINGHAM were denied any points in a dramatic finish to their Elite League match at Peterborough on Monday – having appeared to have engineered a winning position.

Selco Brummies led by three points with three heats to go and seemed to have all the momentum with them after a string of fine rides to overturn a ten-point deficit.

But they were stunned by home reserve Richard Lawson, who came from nowhere to partner first Kenneth Bjerre and then Linus Sundstrom to maximum points in successive races.

Lawson’s form enabled the Panthers to cover for a rib injury to Olly Allen, who came to grief on the first bend of Heat 4 after a clash with Josh Auty, who was somewhat controversially disqualified.

An 8-1 from Ben Barker and Danny King in Heat 7 brought the Brummies back into contention, and superb wins for Sebastian Ulamek and King in Heats 9 and 10 raised hopes of an away win.

Guest Simon Stead teamed up with Martin Smolinski for a 5-1 against the Panthers reserves in Heat 11, and King then won a thrilling duel with Michael Jepsen Jensen to give the visitors a 39-36 lead into the closing stages.

But the Panthers emerged from the interval with all guns blazing and Lawson, Bjerre and Sundstrom conjured a remarkable fightback to win it for the home side and take all three points available.

Brummies co-boss Phil Morris said: “We’re very despondent, we can’t believe the last three races. They had a reserve in two of the last three and we managed to let it slip.

“The boys gave it their all but from a management point of view I can’t be happy. We had a chance tonight with Olly dropping out in his first race, and it was as good a time as any to come here but we fell a bit short.

“We should have got something here, there are no ifs or buts, and I’m frustrated that we got nothing out of it.”

PETERBOROUGH 51: Kenneth Bjerre 13+1, Linus Sundstrom 13+1, Richard Lawson 9+2, Michael Jepsen Jensen 8+1, Lasse Bjerre 5+1, Jason Bunyan 3, Olly Allen 0.

BIRMINGHAM 42: Danny King 9+1, Sebastian Ulamek 9, Ben Barker 7, Simon Stead 6, Martin Smolinski 5+2, Josh Auty 5+1, Tomasz Piszcz 1.
