BRUMMIES 48 ISLANDERS 42

Wednesday June 20, 2007
FAST-RISING star Chris Holder took the individual accolades at Perry Barr - but the Brummies' greater all-round strength carried them to two important Premier League points.

Isle of Wight No.1 Holder, surely a youngster destined for big things in the sport, was in imperious form as he scorched to a 15-point maximum - no mean feat on an away track against the calibre of top riders in the Brummies side.

But Holder's only consistent support came from Jason Bunyan, and the Brummies established an early eight point lead which gave them enough to defend for the rest of the meeting.

Emiliano Sanchez re-passed Bunyan in a classic duel in Heat 7, whilst Ben Powell shared in 5-1s in his first two outings - and also came through to second place from a 15-metre penalty after he touched the tapes in Heat 8, with Aidan Collins dropping a chain on the first bend.

The Brummies' lead hovered between eight and ten points for a time until the Islanders launched a comeback in the second half of the meeting when Holder and Cory Gathercole combined for maximum points in Heat 11.

But Jason Lyons got the better of Bunyan in Heat 12 to put the Brummies back in charge, and shared points in the next two races were enough to secure the win.

There was no way past Holder in the last heat, but Birmingham's better team performance saw them through, with the reserves prominent throughout and Sanchez winning his first two rides.

BIRMINGHAM: Jason Lyons 12+1, Ulrich Ostergaard 9+2, Emiliano Sanchez 9, Ben Powell 8+3, Lee Smart 6, Aidan Collins 3, Jon Armstrong 1.

ISLE OF WIGHT: Chris Holder 15, Jason Bunyan 9, Cory Gathercole 6+1, Krzysztof Stojanowski 5+1, Glen Phillips 5, Andrew Bargh 1, Sam Martin 1.
