BRUMMIES 50 WOLVERHAMPTON 42

Wednesday April 11, 2012
BIRMINGHAM picked up their first Elite League win of the season with a thoroughly convincing local derby win over Wolverhampton at Perry Barr.

The Selco Brummies were right back in-form after their Good Friday disappointment, with the likes of Josh Auty and Ben Barker returning to their early-season standard, and Sebastian Ulamek and Martin Smolinski continuing their encouraging up-turns.

It all added up to a fine start for new home boss Phil Morris, with the visitors rather flattered by two late 5-1s from their big two of Freddie Lindgren and Tai Woffinden, which couldn’t prevent the Brummies from taking maximum points.

Lindgren proved to be beatable early in the meeting with both Bjarne Pedersen and Ben Barker getting the better of the Swede, and a 5-1 from the Brummies in Heat 8 was backed up by a superb win from skipper Danny King over Woffinden in the next race.

When Lindgren went for double-points in Heat 11, Ulamek brilliantly held his nerve against Lindgren’s inside challenge on the final bend and limited his rival to four points rather than six.

With Auty then combining with King and Barker for 5-1s in Heat 12 and 14, it meant the Brummies had enough in hand to cope with conceding equivalent results in Heats 13 and 15 at the end of a highly encouraging night.

Morris said: “It was hard to keep down the top two of Wolverhampton, but we were solid throughout the team and it was a brilliant performance.

“Josh has suddenly jumped to another gear this year, and he was in Heat 15 without doubt, he was top-scorer and he was fantastic. It’s a great result, getting all three points was the plan and it’s a good start for me.”

BIRMINGHAM 50: Josh Auty 13+1, Ben Barker 8+2, Danny King 8+1, Sebastian Ulamek 8, Bjarne Pedersen 7+1, Martin Smolinski 6+2, Chris Mills 0.

WOLVERHAMPTON 42: Tai Woffinden 14, Freddie Lindgren 12+2, Nicolai Klindt 4+1, Ty Proctor 4, Pontus Aspgren 3+2, Thomas Jorgensen 3, Ricky Wells 2.
