BRUMMIES 50 WOLVERHAMPTON 43

Thursday March 22, 2012
BIRMINGHAM got the new season off to a flying start with an excellent all-round display to see off local rivals Wolverhampton at Perry Barr.

A bumper crowd enjoyed what they saw from the new-look Selco Brummies, with Josh Auty making an outstanding home debut in this Midland League fixture.

Auty was unbeaten from his first four rides, carving his way through the field to win Heat 12 from the back, and he only missed out in the last race against the Wolves big guns Tai Woffinden and Freddie Lindgren.

There were also good signs from Martin Smolinski who recovered well from a first-ride fall and produced a superb effort to re-pass Nicolai Klindt and Ty Proctor in Heat 10, whilst Bjarne Pedersen and Sebastian Ulamek both won two races.

Skipper Danny King encountered some mechanical trouble but finished on a high with a 5-1 in Heat 12 which reduced the damage of a surprise 1-8 reverse in Heat 11 when Lindgren was going for double-points.

And there was a popular 5-1 in Heat 14 with Ben Barker team-riding Chris Mills home for a 5-1 over Ty Proctor and Thomas Jorgensen, a race result which made Wolves’ maximum advantage in the last heat of academic interest.

Brummies boss Graham Drury said: “All in all it was a good performance, and what I liked about it was being in a difficult position to nominate my riders for Heat 15 – and I think I would have got very good odds beforehand on not having either Bjarne or Sebastian in that race!

“When I look through each individual, they’ve all contributed and we had complete strength throughout the team. This time last year we lost by two points against Wolves, today we’ve won by seven so hopefully that augurs well for the season.”

BIRMINGHAM 50: Josh Auty 12+1, Sebastian Ulamek 9, Ben Barker 8+1, Bjarne Pedersen 8, Martin Smolinski 5+3, Danny King 5+2, Chris Mills 3+1.

WOLVERHAMPTON 43: Freddie Lindgren 14+1, Tai Woffinden 12, Nicolai Klindt 7, Pontus Aspgren 5+2, Lukasz Sowka 2, Thomas Jorgensen 2, Ty Proctor 1+1.
