COVENTRY 48 BRUMMIES 45

Friday July 29, 2011
BIRMINGHAM will be left wondering what might have been after their 48-45 Elite League defeat at Coventry on Friday – but they will have been boosted by a dramatic return to form of their Polish star Krzysztof Kasprzak.

Kasprzak answered his critics in the best possible way with a faultless 18-point maximum – which included a tactical ride win in the closing stages – and his brilliance helped take the meeting to a last race decider.

With the scores at 45-42 in Coventry’s favour, Kasprzak lined up with Danny King in the final heat with the Brummies needing a 5-1 to snatch a win.

When the tapes lifted King couldn't quite make the first bend with his partner Kasprzak and although he battled gamely, Edward Kennett and Kenni Larsen kept him at bay leaving the Bees with a narrow win.

Despite the eventual loss it was a much-improved performance all-round and but for a fall for King whilst leading Heat 3 and a blown engine for Ales Dryml in Heat 10 whilst on a 5-1 with Daniel Nermark, who knows what might have been.

And Birmingham saw another maximum slip away in Heat 11 when Claus Vissing went from second to last on the opening lap, leaving Kasprzak to once again take the chequered flag.

But trailing 41-31 they finally got their just rewards with a big 8-1 in Heat 13 reducing the Coventry lead to just three-points (42-39). The impressive Kasprzak comfortably raced to a double-point win and King held off the Bees challenge of Kennett and guest Nicolai Klindt for the Brummies full-house.

And then Ulrich Ostergaard and Dryml ensured the match went to a last-race decider when they followed home Ryan Fisher for share of the points in Heat 14.

But sadly it wasn’t to be in the final race and Graham Drury’s men had to settle for just the one Elite League point.
