BRUMMIES 38 LAKESIDE 54

Thursday July 21, 2011
BIRMINGHAM’S sluggish gating proved ultra-costly as Lakeside again showed their liking for Perry Barr to claim a maximum-points away win.

The Hammers had already dumped the Brummies out of the Knockout Cup earlier in the season, and their six-man line-up gave a terrific performance on a night where the home side suffered a catalogue of problems.

The biggest of those, though, was getting to the first bend first, and after Birmingham riders won three of the first four races it was Lakeside who dominated – and more tellingly, the visitors ran just four last places all night, two of them being non-finishes for skipper Lee Richardson when the match was already won.

Brummies dropped eight points down before suffering the blow of conceding a shock 5-1 in Heat 8 – and when captain Daniel King went for double points in the next race, he crashed heavily into the first bend fence and was disqualified.

With Krzysztof Kasprzak’s tactical ride netting only a 5-3 as Peter Ljung stepped up to win for the Hammers, things got worse for the home side with Daniel Nermark having an horrific crash in Heat 11, tangling with Kauko Nieminen at top speed going into turn three and being flung into the fence.

Fortunately, Nermark was able to walk into the ambulance and was not expected to require a hospital visit, but there were more problems with Ulrich Ostergaard taking a 15-metre handicap in Heat 12 for delaying the start after being adjudged to have moved on two occasions.

Ostergaard and fellow reserve Claus Vissing were two home riders who could hold their heads high, with Vissing combining with Kasprzak for a consolation 5-1 in Heat 13, although by then the Hammers were already home and dry.

BIRMINGHAM 38: Krzysztof Kasprzak 11, Ulrich Ostergaard 10+2, Claus Vissing 7+2, Ales Dryml 4, Joe Screen 2, Daniel King 2, Daniel Nermark 2.

LAKESIDE 54: Piotr Swiderski 14+1, Peter Ljung 10, Lee Richardson 9+1, Kauko Nieminen 7+3, Robert Mear 7+2, Stuart Robson 7+1, Adam Shields r/r.
