BRUMMIES 56 LEICESTER 36

Sunday May 29, 2011
BIRMINGHAM emerged victorious from their Bank Holiday weekend challenge against Premier League newcomers Leicester – thanks to an impressive display at Perry Barr on Sunday.

Brummies trailed 47-43 from the first leg, but their revised line-up showed plenty of strength to overturn that narrow margin, with Ben Barker keeping up his hot streak of form.

Barker, Birmingham’s stand-in captain, never looked like dropping a point and was involved in one of the night’s highlights when he team-rode Ritchie Hawkins home to a 5-1 in Heat 10.

The visitors managed to keep things tight early on, but the Brummies took control with a 5-1 in Heat 5 through Claus Vissing and James Wright, the latter moving past Sergey Darkin on the final bend.

Brummies eased clear in the final stages, finishing with three 5-1s on the trot, and one of the biggest cheers was gained by young reserve Tim Webster, who re-passed Lions’ skipper Richard Hall in Heat 14 when the visiting rider was going for double-points.

BIRMINGHAM 56: Ben Barker 14+1, James Wright 13+1, Kevin Wolbert 10+1, Claus Vissing 8+1, Ritchie Hawkins 7+1, Tim Webster 4+1, Luke Priest 0.

LEICESTER 36: Richard Sweetman 9, Mathieu Tresarrieu 8, Sergey Darkin 7, Jan Graversen 4+1, John Oliver 3+1, Jamie Courtney 3+1, Richard Hall 2+1.
