BELLE VUE 50 BRUMMIES 42

Monday May 02, 2011
BIRMINGHAM’S trip to Belle Vue left them frustratingly short of any Elite League points after their patched-up team came close to pulling off a big away win.

Brummies, without four of their first-choice seven riders, stunned the hosts by marching into a 29-19 lead thanks to 5-1s in the first two races, backed up by a further maximum in Heat 8.

James Wright relished his return to Kirkmanshulme Lane, and fellow reserve Nick Morris was also impressive – but it was the Aces’ Ricky Kling who turned his meeting around in the closing stages to the great benefit of his team.

Brummies had conceded a 7-1 in Heat 9 when the Aces used a tactical ride and finished first and second – but in the wrong order for the full eight points – and the visitors were six-up again after the next race as Morris took a superb win over Chris Harris.

But Kling then raised his game to partner Rory Schlein in Heat 11 and Charlie Gjedde in Heat 12 for match-changing 5-1s which suddenly put the Aces ahead.

Birmingham guest Darcy Ward won Heat 13 to keep his side in the hunt, but Kling combined with Hougaard for a 5-1 in the penultimate race to leave the Brummies needing to share Heat 15 to take a consolation point.

But even that was denied them in a close battle between the front three riders, with Schlein the Aces’ hero as he defeated Ward with Harris in third place.

BELLE VUE 50: Rory Schlein 12+2, Patrick Hougaard 12+1, Chris Harris 9, Ricky Kling 8+2, Charlie Gjedde 7+1, Kozza Smith 2, Dawid Stachyra 0.

BIRMINGHAM 42: Darcy Ward 10+2, James Wright 10, Nick Morris 8+1, Ales Dryml 7+2, Joe Screen 6, Shane Parker 1+1, Daniel King R/R.
