BIRMINGHAM 45 KING'S LYNN 45

Sunday May 06, 2007
BRUMMIES are into the semi-finals of the Premier Trophy after battling out a thrilling draw with King's Lynn at Perry Barr on Sunday evening.

A point was the minimum requirement to ensure qualification as the best second-placed team across the competition - but it looked unlikely when the Stars dominated the early stages with three 5-1s in the first seven heats.

Brummies' first maximum came from Brent Werner and Aidan Collins in Heat 8, and they then levelled the scores with consecutive 4-2s, the second of which saw a fine three-way scrap between Collins, Ulrich Ostergaard and Daniel Nermark.

The racing in the second half of the meeting was arguably the best seen at Perry Barr this season, with Emiliano Sanchez somehow finding a way around both Chris Mills and Tomas Topinka for a brilliant win in Heat 11 to keep the scores level.

Jason Lyons then produced a similar outside surge to make it past Nermark in Heat 12, and then it was Ostergaard and Sanchez who put the Brummies in front for the first time by holding Topinka at bay in Heat 13.

But the Stars were not about to give in, and James Brundle and Trevor Harding raised the tension by levelling the match again with a 5-1 in the penultimate heat.

Ostergaard, who had unluckily fallen in Heat 1 just as he was taking the lead, was suffering from a loose saddle just before the race and only just made it back on track in time - and initially it looked like the perfect result as he hit the front with Lyons.

But the Dane was clearly struggling with the bike problem and he was overtaken by Nermark and Topinka on successive laps to enable the visitors to snatch a draw - meaning that everyone went home satisfied after a super evening of entertainment.

BIRMINGHAM: Jason Lyons 12, Ulrich Ostergaard 9, Emiliano Sanchez 7+2, Brent Werner 7, Aidan Collins 5+1, Lee Smart 3, Ben Powell 2+1.

KING'S LYNN: Daniel Nermark 12, Tomas Topinka 10+1, Paul Lee 7, Chris Mills 6+3, James Brundle 6+1, Trevor Harding 4+2, Simon Lambert 0.
