BRUMMIES 50 NEWCASTLE 40 (83-96)

Wednesday October 13, 2010
BIRMINGHAM rounded off their season with a battling win over Newcastle at Perry Barr - but not by enough to make progress in the Knockout Cup.

The BRC Roofing Brummies were eliminated from a major competition by the Diamonds for the third time this year, with the visitors' 23-point first leg lead proving enough to defend.

Brummies gave it their best shot and did cause their opponents some anxious moments, with Aaron Summers superb on his way to a 15-point maximum.

Jason Lyons and Justin Sedgmen got the home side off to a flying start with a 5-1 over Premier League Riders' Champion Kenni Larsen in Heat 1, and after seven races the Brummies had opened up a useful 27-15 advantage.

Unfortunately, a Newcastle 5-1 in Heat 8 put them back in charge and also spelt the end of Chris Kerr's night, the unlucky American having to give best to his ongoing knee injury.

A Birmingham 5-1 in Heat 9 proved to be their final forward move with Larsen taking control of two later races for the Diamonds - and their reserve Dakota North was a constant threat.

Summers defeated both Larsen and fellow Dane Rene Bach in Heat 15 to complete his maximum to the delight of the Perry Barr crowd, but it is the Diamonds who proceed to face Edinburgh in the Final.

BIRMINGHAM 50: Aaron Summers 15, Jason Lyons 10, Richard Sweetman 8+2, Kyle Newman 8, Justin Sedgmen 5+2, Steve Johnston 4+2, Chris Kerr 0.

NEWCASTLE 40: Dakota North 12, Rene Bach 11+1, Kenni Larsen 10+1, Mark Lemon 4+1, Adam McKinna 2, Derek Sneddon 1+1, Jason King r/r.
